How to Use the Mouse DPI Test

This DPI analyzer compares the pointer movement observed by your browser with a physical distance you measure on the desk. For a dependable result, use a ruler, keep the movement straight, and repeat the same motion several times.

  1. Set browser zoom to 100%.
  2. In Windows, use the normal middle pointer-speed position and turn off Enhance pointer precision for the test.
  3. Place a ruler next to the mouse and choose a physical distance—2 inches or 5 centimeters is a practical starting point.
  4. Select Horizontal, Vertical, or Auto direction. Horizontal is easiest for most desks.
  5. Click Start measurement. The browser will try to lock the pointer so screen edges do not stop the movement.
  6. Move the mouse exactly the entered distance, then click once to finish.
  7. Use 5-Run Test and rely on the average when the runs are close together.

Best practice: Do not chase a perfectly round result from one run. If five readings cluster near 790–815, the configured step is probably around 800 DPI. The repeatability of the runs matters more than a single exact-looking number.

How Accurate Is an Online Mouse DPI Checker?

An online checker can provide a useful estimate of effective cursor DPI, but a browser cannot directly read the optical sensor’s raw hardware CPI. The observed number can be influenced by operating-system pointer speed, acceleration, browser zoom, display scaling, the browser’s pointer-event units, and how precisely you follow the ruler.

That is why this tool does more than print one number. The 5-run mode calculates an average, percentage deviation, a confidence label, and the nearest common 50-DPI step. This helps separate a stable result from an accidental one.

How the DPI Calculation Works

DPI means dots per inch. In this browser test, the practical calculation is the number of pointer units observed along the selected direction divided by the physical inches moved.

The result is most useful when the same setup produces similar readings repeatedly. A large spread usually means the physical distance was inconsistent, acceleration was active, the path was diagonal, or the browser could not capture the movement cleanly.

What Is Mouse DPI?

DPI (dots per inch) is the familiar consumer term for mouse sensitivity. A higher number moves the pointer farther for the same physical hand movement. Is higher DPI better for gaming?

What is the difference between DPI and eDPI?
